Shepherd / Mixed Dog

Thelma the Dog needs a home

Thelma is a smart, active, energetic girl who’s about 4-5 years old and tips the scales at about 52 lbs. ... and she's looking for her “special someone!” Here's what Thelma’s foster mom told us about her:

"Thelma is very food-motivated, so training classes with her have been a real joy — in fact, she recently graduated from Lisa Berkenstock's Pet Dog Manners class in Horsham. There was just one catch: For weeks, I tried to teach her the ‘Down’ cue, and nothing seemed to be working ... until we discovered the magic of CheezIts! Then she learned ‘Down’ in about 10 minutes using them as her reward! :-D She’s completely housetrained and crate-trained, too."

"Thelma likes to stick close to her ‘person’; she sleeps in bed with me and follows me around the house. If given the chance, she will try to squeeze through the front door ahead of you, so it’s best to be cautious when coming or going. She also has a rather unusual hobby: She likes to watch other cats and dogs on television and in YouTube videos! (Check out the photo of Thelma gazing raptly at kitty videos :-) It all started with the Westminster Dog Show, when she was captivated by all of the dogs prancing around the show ring. It’s amazing — she will sit and watch for more than 30 minutes and still expect to see more!"

Thelma likes to take her time getting to know people, and is sometimes easily startled, so her ideal owner will be someone who’s quiet and patient, and will give her the time and space she needs to feel comfortable. She would do best in a home that has a fenced yard for exercise, and we think she'd be happiest as an only dog. No cats for Thelma, either — those fast-moving fluffy things are just too, too tempting! — and fast-moving little kids are a bit much for her as well. Her ideal home would be with a quiet, single woman or a couple; older, dog-savvy kids may okay, too. But whomever her special someone turns out to be, we know Thelma will be a great companion ... maybe your companion?
